Follow this step-by-step guide to install and configure your Nanit smart baby monitor system, from unboxing to live feed.
Setting up a smart baby monitor can feel overwhelming, but the Nanit system is designed to get you from box to live feed in under 20 minutes. Whether you bought the Smart Baby Monitor + Flex Stand or the Premium Bundle, the core steps are the same. This guide walks you through every stage so you can start watching your little one with confidence.

Before you begin, make sure you have a stable Wi-Fi network (2.4 GHz band works best), the Nanit app installed on your phone, and a power outlet near the crib. You'll also want to decide on a mounting option: the included Flex Stand, a Floor Stand, or a wall mount. Each has its own setup quirks, which we'll cover below.
Unboxing and Choosing Your Mount
Open the box and lay out all components: the camera unit, power adapter, mounting hardware, and any stands you purchased. The Smart Baby Monitor + Flex Stand comes with a flexible tripod that sits on a table or attaches to the crib rail. If you bought the Floor Stand separately, it provides a sturdy, floor-level mount that keeps the camera at the perfect height above the mattress.
For most users, the Flex Stand is the quickest option—just clamp it to the crib rail and adjust the neck. The Floor Stand takes a few extra minutes to assemble but offers a cleaner look and won't wobble if your baby kicks the crib. Both mounts let you adjust the camera angle after setup, so don't worry about getting it perfect on the first try.
- Tip: If you're using the Flex Stand, position the clamp on the side of the crib opposite the door for the best view of the entire sleep area.
Powering Up and Connecting to Wi-Fi
Plug the power adapter into the camera and then into a wall outlet. The camera will chime and its LED will start blinking blue. Open the Nanit app on your phone and create an account or log in. Tap "Add a New Nanit" and follow the on-screen prompts to scan the QR code on the camera's base. The app will guide you through connecting to your Wi-Fi network—make sure your phone is on the same network during setup.
If the connection fails, try moving your router closer or using a Wi-Fi extender. The camera requires a stable 2.4 GHz signal for the best video quality. Once connected, the LED turns solid green and you'll see a live feed in the app. This is also a good time to update the camera's firmware if prompted.
- Troubleshooting: If the blue LED keeps blinking, restart the camera by unplugging it for 10 seconds, then try again.
Positioning the Camera for Optimal View
With the camera powered and connected, adjust the mount so the lens is about 12–18 inches above the crib mattress, aimed straight down at the sleep surface. This overhead angle is key for Nanit's breathing monitoring feature to work accurately. If you're using the Floor Stand, extend the pole to the correct height and tighten the locking collar. For the Flex Stand, bend the neck so the camera points directly at the baby's chest.
Check the app's live view to make sure the entire crib is visible and there are no shadows or glare from windows. The camera's night vision will activate automatically in low light, so test it by dimming the room. If the image looks grainy, adjust the camera's position slightly to avoid direct light sources.
- Pro tip: Use the app's "Crib View" guide to align the camera perfectly—it overlays a grid on the screen to help you center the image.
Configuring Breathing Wear and Sleep Tracking
Nanit's breathing monitoring requires one of the Breathing Wear products: the Breathing Wear Pajamas or the Breathing Wear Sleeping Bag. These garments have a printed pattern that the camera reads to track your baby's breathing motion. Dress your baby in the appropriate size and lay them on their back in the crib. In the app, enable "Breathing Monitoring" and select the garment you're using.
The app will calibrate for about 30 seconds, then display a breathing rate on the screen. You can also set up sleep tracking by defining a sleep zone in the app—this tells the camera which area of the crib to monitor for movement and sound. Sleep summaries will appear in the app each morning, showing total sleep time, wake-ups, and room temperature.
- Note: Breathing Wear is optional but recommended for the full smart monitoring experience. Without it, the camera still works as a standard video monitor.
Once your Nanit monitor is set up and calibrated, you'll have a reliable view of your baby's sleep patterns and breathing. The app sends alerts for motion, sound, and temperature changes, so you can rest easier. If you ever need to move the camera to another room, simply unplug and remount—the system remembers your settings.
